Care & Tips

Candles can totally transform a space, uplift moods and provide the perfect ambiance at dinner parties. Our classic candles have a burn time of 40 hours, but to keep them burning brightly and fragrant, we've pulled together some of our top candle care tips.

With proper care, you'll maximise the lifespan of your candle. A cared for candle ensures a clean and even burn and minimises the appearance of any unwanted debris or soot. Storing your candle in the correct way will also ensure that its scent remains as strong as it did when you first opened the packaging. Follow these steps to keep your candles looking and smelling fresh...

1. TRIMMING THE WICK

To ensure a clean and even burn, you should trim your wick about half a centimetre to prevent unwanted soot, smoke and tunneling. This should be done before and after each use. If you haven't got one already, our stainless steel wick trimmers are a must-have candle accessory. All our candles are complete with a pure cotton wick which also helps to minimise an uneven burn.

2. LIGHTING THE CANDLE

You should place your candle on a stable and flat surface and it goes without saying, away from flammables, children and pets. Try not to place your candles above a fireplace, radiator or in direct sunlight as the wax might begin to melt.

3. CANDLE BURN TIME

To prevent tunneling, it's important to burn a candle for a long enough time during its first burn to ensure that the wax melts all the way to the edge of the candle's vessel. This usually takes around 2 hours and will help to prevent pooling the next time it's lit.

If you free-styled and your candle tunnelled, or the wax only melted on one side, don't panic, you can fix it. Simply wrap tin foil around the candle vessel like a blanket, light and then leave for around 30 mins. Remove the foil and ta-da!

4. EXTINGUISHING THE CANDLES

To extinguish a candle, ideally use a wick dipper or snuffer. Try to avoid blowing out the flame as this can spray the wax and create soot.

5. Storing your candles

Once your candle has cooled, you may notice some residue. Ensure this is wiped before you light it next and move the candle out of direct sunlight.

And for those with show candles, we understand! Even though your candle will never see a flame, you’ll want to keep them dust free. Do this by using our oak candle lidsplinths and cloches.
